Overview

Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty, the Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion will be responsible for providing dedicated leadership and executing policies and initiatives focused on diversity and inclusion in the Office of the Dean of the Faculty (ODoF) and advancing Princeton University’s strategic commitment to academic excellence. The Associate Dean will be an expert in the best practices of diversity and inclusion for the affairs of faculty and academic professionals. This person would support the efforts of the Dean of the Faculty and the Associate Deans for Academic Affairs in training search officers and search committee chairs on implementing fair and inclusive processes for searches for faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and academic professionals at the University. This person would assist the Dean and Deputy Dean of the Faculty in managing the process of receiving and responding to recruitment proposals from departments. In addition, the Associate Dean, along with the Vice Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, will work with the Dean to support the ability of all faculty and academic departments to monitor and improve the departmental and campus climate for inclusion. The Associate Dean will measure outcomes with the goal of providing a vision and integrated programs for diversity and inclusion efforts. This person would lead other diversity and inclusion initiatives, and support ODoF’s development and revision of policies, as needed.



Responsibilities

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the Dean of the Faculty in working with academic departments to diversify the pools of applicants for faculty and other professional positions appointed through the ODoF.
  • Engage departments in each stage of the hiring process and support/guide them in developing applicant pools, and implementing best practices in their search processes.
  • Support the Vice Dean for Diversity and Inclusion’s leadership and development of the Presidential Postdoctoral Fellows Program and other related programs.
  • Partner with other diversity initiatives at Princeton and elsewhere, including target colleges and universities, and other entities to identify and encourage promising candidates to apply to faculty, postdoctoral, or research positions at Princeton.
  • Work with others in the ODoF, Office of the Provost, and academic departments to collect, track, analyze, and report data related to University diversity and climate.
  • Monitor national trends. Collaborate with the Deputy Dean and Vice Dean to make plans for the improved competitiveness of Princeton for faculty and academic-professional talent.
  • Represent ODoF on various University-wide committees/convenings focused on diversity and inclusion.
  • Provide regular feedback to the Dean of the Faculty and faculty on the effectiveness of these diversity and inclusion strategies to inform future decision-making.
  • Support other initiatives as needed.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree and 5-7 years of work experience in higher education DEI, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Successful candidate will have the knowledge, demonstrated achievement, and understanding of the importance of a diverse and inclusive environment in a university setting. Documented experience working with faculty in higher education is required.
  • Ability to work closely with department chairs and directors of program, centers, and institutes, as well as with faculty, staff, and administrative campus partners.
  • Proven record of managing complex issues; communicating with diverse constituencies; meeting deadlines; prioritizing competing demands.
  • Excellent attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, the ability to use discretion when handling confidential and sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently at all organizational levels and with complex administrative teams.
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and presentation skills; excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships and ability to collaborate with a wide variety of constituencies for teamwork and consensus building.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and ability to work independently on concurrent projects under the pressure of multiple deadlines. Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment and successful track record on diversity and inclusivity with a broad knowledge of equity-related topics (Title IX, the American with Disabilities Act, etc.).
