Community/Politics Reporter

The Green Bay Press-Gazette, in Green Bay, Wis, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin is looking for a reporter who is energetic, curious and persistent to cover the city of Green Bay and its suburbs as well as local politics.

This reporter will help readers navigate their lives, keep on top of local issues and trends and connect with the community and world around them.

This reporter should establish ties and contacts in the Green Bay community and have a deep understanding of what residents care about. The ideal reporter is also SEO savvy and can spot high-interest topics using engagement tools like social media and Google Trends.

A central part of the beat is covering city government and its actions in a way that centers on residents and how their lives are affected. Often, this calls for distilling complicated governmental processes into clear, interesting articles. At other times, you may be holding government officials accountable with watchdog reporting.

This reporter will also look for opportunities to identify broader, viral political moments of interest to local readers, and work closely with our state politics team to respond to breaking news, cover live events, take part in fact-checking efforts and plan for elections.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette is part of the USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin and works closely with the Appleton Post-Crescent and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Home to the NFL’s Green Bay Packers, greater Green Bay is growing in population, diversity and opportunities. It’s the gateway to the northwoods – home to lakes, forests, small towns, camping, hiking, skiing – yet only two hours north of metro areas like Milwaukee and Madison.

The ideal candidate can work independently to take a story from idea to publication, but also thrives in a collaborative environment.

We know not everyone will have all the skills listed here. If you’re on the fence about applying, please do! You’ll be joining a team that values continued learning and experimentation and will give you support to grow in this role.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1-3 years related experience preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, news judgment and headline-writing ability.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including empathy and compassion.
  • Proficiency on social media platforms; including but not limited to Facebook, X/Threads, Instagram and Reddit, and experience engaging readers in this public space.
  • Energetic self-starter and a fast thinker who can spot stories that matter.
  • An understanding of metrics/analytics programs such as Parse.ly and Google Trends and development of story ideas derived from data.
  • Understanding of SEO and other optimization opportunities and a demonstrated ability to learn new skills in social and digital.
  • Ability to multitask and excel in a fast-paced environment under intense deadline pressure.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and efficiently with a team of journalists.
  • Strong writing, spelling and grammar skills and knowledge of AP style.
  • Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct.
  • This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment, post-offer background check, drug screen and motor vehicle record check.
