Locksmith Apprentice


Job Summary
The Locksmith Apprentice supports the university key control system and security of facilities. Assists with the repair, maintenance, and installation of hardware pertaining to door openings. Works alongside maintenance team to perform semi-skilled preventative maintenance and routine repairs to university facilities and equipment. Assists skilled craft workers on assignments.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Assists with the repair and maintenance of locks, doors, and frames. Installs new locks and assists with the response to emergency calls.
  • Assists with the cutting of new and duplicate keys and pins cores as needed.
  • Assists with new construction key/lock take-offs while reviewing and approving hardware specifications according to FGCU standards.
  • Maintains records and logs of repairs, inventory used, costs, time and other information requested.
  • Cleans and maintains all work areas, tools, and equipment. Ensures tools and equipment are in a safe operating condition.
  • Maintains tool and supply inventory. Assists with ordering supplies for the department.
  • Complies with applicable environmental, health and safety laws and regulations, university policy, and accepted safe work practices.
  • Assists with routine and preventative repairs and maintenance of exterior sliding and swing doors.
  • Assists skilled craft workers by performing tasks such as preparation of a job or site surfaces, carrying tools and equipment, and providing assistance with repairs.
  • Serves as Essential Personnel and provides assistance in the event of an emergency on campus.


Other Duties:
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:
  • Two years of full-time related experience providing general building repairs and maintenance.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Valid driver's license.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Work experience in higher education or a residential setting.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • General knowledge of building maintenance such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of basic hand tools, power tools, materials, shop equipment, and maintenance related processes.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety requirements.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with a diverse group of staff, faculty, students, and the community in a service-oriented environment.
  • Ability to set priorities and complete assignments on time.
  • Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations and environments.
  • Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records, logs, and files.
  • Ability to work on call rotation for after-hours emergencies.
  • Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes an equitable environment.
